Why "Just Be Natural" on Camera Is a Big Mistake

The “just be natural” camera myth trips up entrepreneurs. I've seen it time and time again.

Read about the mistake Terri made and one fast tip you can use to avoid it...

Hey Suzanne Glover here talking about a big problem with video today. It's about thinking you can just “be natural” on camera and nail your videos. That’s a trap many entrepreneurs fall into, and I learned it the hard way in my film career.

Here's a quick story why this common advice is a myth—and what you need to do instead.

Natural isn't natural in the lens...

When I was shooting a headshot for my colleague Terri, an actress, she insisted on skipping makeup saying it made her skin look bad and I gave in, despite knowing why she needed it.

But when she saw the proofs, you want to know what her first words were?

“Look at my skin, it looks terrible!”

Why? It's because the camera magnifies flaws and distorts reality.

Showing up “naturally” on camera is a learned skill because you’re trying to be "natural in an unnatural environment."

And this isn’t just for women—men face it too. In fact, when I did a headshot for a male client who showed up “just as himself,” the “before shot” was terrible—flat, unflattering and not up to industry standards for catching attention. But after I applied makeup, his “after shot” looked sharp, leaner and attention grabbing. The difference was night and day.

The problem? Video makes you look worse than you look in person unless you compensate with on-camera techniques that make you look natural. Without guidance, you’re stuck with awkward, unpolished videos that push audiences away.

Here's one tip: Whether you are male or female, at least use a powder foundation to even out spots on yur face you don't see in person, but the camera magnifies.

If you want to look natural the right way, my Video Influencing SystemTM teaches you film industry techniques to compensate and connect authentically on camera, for both men and women.
