Why Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect on Camera

“Practice makes perfect” is a myth for video. Teaching at the Screen Actors Guild, I saw bad habits derail seasoned actors.

Hey Suzanne Glover here asking another “deep” question... Do you think practicing video on your own will make you a pro? If so, think again. The fact is, practice makes permanent – whether it's good or bad.

I discovered this when I taught at the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory and it’s a trap many entrepreneurs fall into online. Let me share a story about why the common phrase “practice makes perfect” is a myth—and what you need instead.

I saw it firsthand...

For over a decade, I taught at the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory. I saw it firsthand: experienced actors, with real work under their belts, struggling because they had ingrained bad habits. Breaking those habits was tough. Sure, practice helps to a point, but it can also cement bad habits.

The public’s being fed a myth: just practice on your own, and you’ll get better. But how do you know you’re not locking in bad habits? If you’re practicing incorrectly, you’re making those mistakes permanent.

This hits entrepreneurs hard. You might spend hours filming videos, thinking you’re improving, only to reinforce habits that turn off your audience—like awkward gestures or flat delivery. Without guidance, you’re stuck in a cycle of effort without impact.

Here's one tip: record a short video and watch it without the sound on so you notice your body language, eye contact and facial expressions. It's amazing what you'll see with the sound off.
