Why My Audition Tapes Went From Tapes to USB—and What It Means for Your Business

My audition tapes went from clunky VHS to sleek USBs to keep up with tech. Your videos need the same evolution!

Hey Suzanne Glover here and I'd like to ask you an important question: Are you sure your videos are keeping up with audience expectations? And I'm not talking AI or the latest “video tech gadget.” I'm talking about human connection through video – that's what your audience really wants.

Yet many entrepreneurs often miss the mark online because they’re using outdated approaches, like I once did in my acting career. Let me share a story about how I learned to evolve with technology and audience expectations—and why you need to do the same to stay relevant.

Video then and now...

Back in the early 1980s, I was navigating the film industry as an actress. Video technology and performance expectations were changing fast, and we had to keep up. Producers, directors and audiences kept expecting more with each new rendition of video tech.

Meaning, as the tech got better, our acting skills and camera presentation needed to improve to keep up with the changes. And this went on for decades – and is still evolving – from silent films pantomime gestures to black/white “over the top” acting in television's beginnings to deeper, yet subtle drama as the medium progressed with three-chip, high definition and beyond.

For me, that meant my audition clothes and performance techniques had to change as camera technologies improved. In other words, I had to evolve as the medium of video evolved. I went from bulky tapes to sleek USB drives, each shift demanding new ways to present myself. It wasn’t just about showing up—it was about adapting to what the new medium demanded.

This wasn’t optional. If I didn’t adjust, I’d lose roles to those who did. The same applies to your business today. Video is the new norm, but if you’re not evolving with it—using old-school slides or unpolished setups—you’re falling behind. Audiences want to feel connected to you in a world of video where the human connection is disappearing. And the best way to do this is using the latest video equipment which makes you look and sound great – set up the right way – and presenting yourself in an emotionally connecting manner.

Here's one tip: Instead of using “any old light” in your office or home, get a good lighting setup that makes you stand out from the herd of people in the dark on video. Because “showing up in the dark” may have been okay when the pandemic hit and everyone was scrambling to use video, but now, audiences are more savvy and the bar has been raised on how you show up on video.

And when you want help, My Video Influencing SystemTM guides you to evolve with video tech, using strategic, adaptable funnels to keep your audience engaged.
