From Silent Films to Viral Videos: Why Your Business Needs to Talk

Video’s the new norm, yet entrepreneurs dodge it. It's a "video" revolution, just like a film revolution that changed history over 100 years ago.

Hey Suzanne Glover here and if you're like most, you're falling behind online and here's why... A revolution is sweeping online marketing and many entrepreneurs just like you are coping... without really grasping its true impact! This revolution is video. The pandemic put everyone on camera, yet many businesses still avoid or refuse to accept this shift in how business is done. So, to really understand why you’re falling behind, let me relate it to another “video” revolution that changed life nearly 100 years ago...

Overnight, history changed...

You see... in 1927, the first “talking film” The Jazz Singer, came out and turned the film industry upside down.

Before that, films were silent, and audiences were happy with – very overstated – pantomime acting because it was “the norm.”

But when The Jazz Singer showed the public the magic of talking & singing on film, audiences didn’t want to go back because the “new norm” of sound was created.

That’s what’s happening with video today. Yet most entrepreneurs are still in the “silent era,” not understanding how audiences want to see them now.

So what does that mean? If you’re showing up on camera without taking it seriously or knowing how to communicate through the medium, you’re not giving audiences what they want. One thing they want, for example, and —I hear this over and over again —is to see you on camera. They want to see your face and they want to connect with you emotionally. And there’s a scientific reason for this; in fact.. it’s primal. I talk about it all the time in my messaging: there’s a primal need to see your face. It’s actually built into their brains so a part of their brain wants to see your face.

And although “showing up on camera” has become more frequent, many people are driving away potential customers because they don’t know how to act or communicate on camera.

I experienced this myself when I talked to a business owner on the phone about his service and signed up because he was very personable – on the phone.

But then he made a fatal mistake... he held a live on boarding webinar where he was so offensive on camera, I said to myself, “I’m not dealing with this guy,” and I canceled my purchase.

Bottom line: He lost my business because he didn’t understand how video has rules to “look natural” which aren't “naturally intuitive.”

And since video has become “the new norm” during this new revolution – like “sound” was after The Jazz Singer, audiences not only expect video, but they want it to be emotionally connecting and engaging or they're gone in a click.
